The Apple iPhone 3GS Design Patent
Since its release in 2007, the iPhone has been incredibly popular, with over 17 million sold worldwide. This design patent protects the sleek shape and design of the iPhone. Since the iPhone is generally simplistic in design, one would think that there is no point to acquiring a design patent. But Steve Jobs and the folks at Apple knew better. As seen above, the iPhone has only a few exterior characteristics - large flat screen, curved back, a few buttons, and a few plugs. However, this simple look has become an exquisite appearance exclusive to the powerful smartphone.
